The knee joint will be more closely examined. The lateral collateral and posterior ligaments are shown, as well as a portion of the menisci, followed by a view of the more broadened medial collateral ligament. The cruciate ligaments are revealed. Their positioning prevents anterior or posterior dislocation of the knee joint.
The menisci are specialized fibrocartilaginous structures that are found in a limited number of joints. The menisci act like washers that work together with the ligaments of the knee to help guide and support the joint throughout its complex range of motion since the knee joint is a hinge joint which can rotate. The menisci also bear weight.
Lastly, the critical congruity of the femoral condyles within the menisci is emphasized. Significant damage to the meniscus in ones youth will result in a very high incidence of osteoarthritis in that knee twenty years later.
