New technology has allowed for a dramatically improved ability to diagnosis certain diseases. One example is the use of bone densitometry in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disorder in which there is a decrease in calcium mineralization of bone. It is an asymptomatic process which typically slowly worsens over several decades until the clinical picture is punctuated by the pain of a bone fracture. Vertebral fractures are common and, along with the pain, lead to both a decrease in height and deformity. Hip fractures have a mortality rate of 20%, and many patients that survive do not return to their previous level of function. Approximately 50% of American women are at risk for developing osteoporosis in their lifetime, and they are often unaware they have the condition. Bone densitometry can easily, safely, and accurately detect whether osteoporosis is present as well as determine the degree of bone thinning and the risk of fracture. Once the diagnosis has been made, there are now several safe and effective treatments for osteoporosis which can significantly reduce the risk of fracture. The Coeur d'Alene Arthritis Clinic utilizes the Lunar DPX2000 bone densitometer in the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis.
